What Is Spring Equinox?

Occurring between March 20-21 each year, the spring equinox (Vernal Equinox) in the northern hemisphere marks the tipping point between winter and spring. This is a day when the day and night are the same length. It’s also the first day of spring.

Since the Winter Solstice (December 21st), the light of the sun has been basking more and more of the earth for longer periods of time. This day of equal light and dark is spiritually significant because it represents the duality within. You are both dark and light, and this short but profound period of balance is a reminder of the necessity of both.

After March 20th, the days grow in length until the Summer Solstice, where we experience the longest day and shortest night of the year.

Spring equinox is a pivotal point that humans have celebrated in a multitude of ways. From fire rituals to planting crops, this time represents abundance and prosperity for all! It’s also the beginning of Aries season (AKA the astrological new year), which represents pure power, potential and new beginnings.

You can celebrate spring equinox through rituals and ceremonies that recalibrate your inner light from months of darkness and prepare your home and heart for the surge of energy on the horizon.

5 Spring Equinox Rituals to Celebrate Light and New Beginnings:

Open your home, heart and soul to the light of spring with rituals that have been practiced since ancient times.

1. Cleanse Your Space

First things first: it’s time for spring cleaning! The spring equinox is the perfect time to rid your space of any negative energy that may have accumulated over the winter months. Grab a broom, sweep away the dust and cobwebs, and open up your windows to let in fresh air.

While you’re at it, light incense or sage to cleanse your space and create a clean slate for the new season.

External clutter creates internal clutter!

To take it a step further with this spring equinox ritual, cleanse your front door and entryway! This is energetically where things enter your life, and a clean front door is very important in feng shui. Add apple cider vinegar to a bowl of water and clean your door and entryway.

Get rid of any dirt, dust and debris for a fresh opening to the miracles you’re calling in. You can sprinkle essential oils along the threshold and invite in energies that are for your highest good.

2. Plant Seeds

Spring is all about growth and renewal, so what better way to celebrate than by planting seeds? Whether you have a garden or just a few pots on your windowsill, take intentional time to sow seeds and watch as they grow into beautiful plants.

As you plant your seeds, set intentions for what you want to grow in your life this season. Maybe you want to cultivate more love, play, or abundance. Whatever it is, plant those intentions along with your seeds and watch as they both blossom over the coming weeks. And be sure to water them regularly!

3. Create a Spring Altar

Creating a spring altar is a great way to honor the spring equinox. For this spring equinox ritual, gather flowers, crystals (like citrine, pyrite or quartz), seeds, eggs, elements of light and dark (to represent balance) and anything that calls to you for a new beginning.

Light candles and spend time in meditation or prayer, focusing on the energy of new beginnings and growth. You can leave your altar up until the Summer Solstice, or change it whenever you feel called. The important thing is to come to your altar often, even just for five minutes, to continue to invoke the power of the season into your life.

4. Celebrate With Fire

Fire has long been associated with the spring equinox, as it represents the returning warmth and light of the sun. To celebrate this, you can light a fire in your backyard or fire pit and invite friends over for a bonfire.

From fire rituals to planting crops, the spring equinox represents abundance and prosperity for all!

A simple spring equinox ritual honoring fire can also look like lighting a candle and focusing on the flame, while you stoke your own inner fire. Reflect on what you want to release from the past season and what you want to invite into your life for the new season. This is a powerful ritual that can help you let go of what no longer serves you and make space for new opportunities and growth.

5. Meditate With Crystals

Spring equinox is the perfect time to work with crystals! Crystals that align with the energy of the season include citrine for abundance, rose quartz for love, or clear quartz for clarity. Place your crystals out in the sun on the day of the spring equinox to charge them with the light of this new beginning.

Then, find a quiet place to sit, hold your chosen crystal in your hand, and meditate on what you want to manifest this season. Infuse the crystal with your intention and place it somewhere you’ll see it often to remind you of what you’re calling in.

BONUS Spring Equinox Ritual: Tarot Spread

If you work with tarot or oracle cards, this three-card spread will help you bridge the gap between winter and spring. It’s called the Bridge Spread. Close your eyes, tune in, shuffle your cards, and get clear on where you want to see your life go this season.

You’ll pull three cards. The first card (left side) is where you are now. The second card (right side) is where you are going. The third card (middle) is the bridge that will help you get there. Journal on the cards you pull and how you can make your dreams come true.

This Spring Equinox, Tap into Your Power

For millennia, the spring equinox has been celebrated and revered in many different ways. With Aries season kicking us off into the brightest and most active quarter of the year, now is the time to own your power.

Marianne Williamson so famously said, “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.”

Don’t allow your fear of your power to keep you from your full potential. Embrace ALL of you, darkness and light, to see your life flow with grace and ease.
